APPOINTMENT OF AN INDEPENDENT COMMISSION INTO VETERAN SUICIDE
Veterans Centre Sydney Northern Beaches welcomes the announcement of a permanent commissioner to investigate suicides of current and former Defence Force personnel.
The Veterans Centre Sydney Northern Beaches (VCSNB) welcomes the announcement of an independent and enduring commission, viewing this as another proactive step for positive change to the veteran community.
The VCSNB is committed to working with the commission, just as it has worked with the Productivity Commission, and other government departments to instil evidence based best practice for the community.
While the deliverables from this commission will become apparent in time, the VCSNB will continue its work, supporting many current and former Defence Force personnel and their families who are experiencing medical separation from the Defence Force, hospitalisation, chronic physical/psychological health, financial distress and homelessness. This is a time of significant distress for these individuals and their families, requiring effective assistance to prevent a decline in health.
The VCSNB hopes in the coming years, the commission will have a positive impact reducing the high suicide rate in the veteran community, sparing veteran’s families of a tragic loss and the Australian community the loss of those who served their country.
